Alkaline or "hard" water has high dissolved salts and minerals like magnesium and calcium. The dissolved salts react with detergents and soaps, which prevents lathering and interfering with the cleaning process. The mineral deposits can also build up in pipes, which reduces flow to appliances and taps. Softening cartridges make use of the ion exchange principle.
