A Salt Chlorine System for hot tubs, spas, and swim spas is a water treatment system that uses salt to generate chlorine, which keeps the water clean and sanitized. Unlike traditional methods where chlorine is manually added, a salt chlorine system uses a process called electrolysis to convert salt into chlorine as needed.

Here's how it works:

  1. Salt Addition: A small amount of salt is added to the water, usually at a much lower concentration than seawater.

  2. Electrolysis: The system includes a salt cell, which is an electrolysis unit that passes an electric current through the water. This current converts the dissolved salt (sodium chloride) into chlorine.

  3. Sanitization: The chlorine produced by the salt cell effectively kills bacteria, algae, and other contaminants in the water, keeping it clean and safe for use.

  4. Chlorine Cycle: The chlorine eventually reverts back to salt, and the process repeats, continuously maintaining the correct chlorine levels in the water.

Spas and hot tubs can now benefit from saltwater chlorination, just as millions of swimming pool owners have for decades. Since spas typically experience higher usage and warmer water temperatures than pools, salt systems designed for spas are built to handle these increased demands. For very large hot tubs, many opt to install full-size saltwater chlorinators, similar to those used in small swimming pools, to ensure the spa's needs are adequately met.
