What does a phosphate filter do?

Phosphates are used in water filter systems to inhibit corrosion of water mains/plumbing (iron, steel, galvanized, lead, copper), and sequester nuisance metals in the water supply (iron, manganese, calcium, magnesium). The result and benefits will be: Prevent "red" (from the iron) and "black" (from manganese) water.

Carbon block filter elements consist of finely powdered activated carbon particles that have been bonded together to form a totally uniform solid block profile with superior absorptive capacity. Filters are finished with single layer of spun bonded polypropylene and protective polypropylene netting. Manufactured entirely from FDA-approved materials and is designed to fit most standard housings.
