View full detailsNeed a heater that keeps your pool warm without running up your electric bill? An inverter pool heat pump is the most efficient option on the market. We carry inverter models from AquaCal, Madimack, and Moov, with free shipping on every order.
A pool inverter heat pump pulls warmth from the surrounding air and transfers it to your pool water through a refrigerant cycle. The difference between an inverter and a standard heat pump is the compressor. Inverter models use a variable-speed compressor that modulates to match demand. Standard heat pumps run at one fixed speed and cycle on and off.
That difference makes inverter units:
An inverter heat pump moves heat from outside air into your pool through a refrigerant cycle:
Because heat pumps move existing heat instead of creating it, they deliver four to seven units of heat per unit of electricity. Inverter compressors push that ratio higher by matching speed to demand.
A standard compressor runs at one fixed RPM set by AC line frequency (60 Hz in the U.S.). It shuts off at setpoint and restarts at full speed when water cools.
An inverter converts AC to DC and back to AC at a controlled frequency, modulating compressor RPM continuously between low speed and full speed. The compressor never has to stop and restart.
What that looks like in practice:
An inverter pool pump compressor uses less electricity than a fixed-speed equivalent because it runs at lower average wattage and avoids repeated startup spikes.
Real-world operating costs depend on:
COP is the headline efficiency rating for any pool heat pump. A COP of 6.0 means six units of heat output per unit of electricity drawn.

COP varies with conditions. The same unit may rate 6.5 at 80°F air and 4.0 at 50°F air. Check the test conditions on the spec sheet, and prefer AHRI-certified models for independently verified ratings.
Sizing comes down to BTU per hour. The four factors that matter most:

Year-round residential use |
Warm-weather seasonal use |
Quick-heat or cold-climate use |
A heat pump's efficiency depends on the heat available in the outside air. As the ambient temperature drops, less heat is available to extract.
In cooler regions, a cold-climate inverter model can stretch your swim season by weeks on either end.
Most manufacturer warranties require professional installation. The basics:
If your circulation pump motor needs replacement at the same time, see our pool pump motors selection.
If you have an above-ground setup, see our above-ground pool heaters collection.Â
What is an inverter pool heat pump?Â
A pool heater that uses ambient air as its heat source and a variable-speed compressor to match output to demand. Quieter, more efficient, and longer-lasting than a fixed-speed heat pump.
How much does an inverter pool heat pump cost to run?Â
Operating cost depends on electricity rates, climate, target temperature, pool size, and cover use. In moderate climates, inverter heat pumps cost less per month than gas or standard heat pumps.
Are inverter heat pumps better than gas pool heaters?Â
For year-round or regular use in mild climates, yes. For occasional fast-heat needs or cold-climate operation, gas often makes more sense.
What size inverter heat pump do I need for my pool?Â
Most residential in-ground pools need 85,000 to 145,000 BTU/hr. Send us your pool dimensions, and we'll match a unit for you.
How long do inverter pool heat pumps last?Â
12 to 15 years or longer with proper installation and maintenance. The variable-speed compressor avoids the start-stop wear that shortens fixed-speed units.
