Inverter Pool Heat Pump

Need a heater that keeps your pool warm without running up your electric bill? An inverter pool heat pump is the most efficient option on the market. We carry inverter models from AquaCal, Madimack, and Moov, with free shipping on every order.

Pool Inverter Heat Pump

A pool inverter heat pump pulls warmth from the surrounding air and transfers it to your pool water through a refrigerant cycle. The difference between an inverter and a standard heat pump is the compressor. Inverter models use a variable-speed compressor that modulates to match demand. Standard heat pumps run at one fixed speed and cycle on and off.

That difference makes inverter units:

  • Quieter at part-load speeds.
  • More efficient at maintaining temperature.
  • Longer-lasting with less compressor wear.
  • Better in cold weather than fixed-speed units.

How an Inverter Heat Pump Pool System Works

An inverter heat pump moves heat from outside air into your pool through a refrigerant cycle:

  1. Fan draws ambient air across an evaporator coil filled with refrigerant.
  2. Refrigerant absorbs heat and changes from liquid to gas.
  3. Variable-speed compressor raises refrigerant pressure and temperature.
  4. Heat exchanger transfers heat from the refrigerant to the pool water.
  5. Refrigerant cools and condenses, then cycles back to start over.

Because heat pumps move existing heat instead of creating it, they deliver four to seven units of heat per unit of electricity. Inverter compressors push that ratio higher by matching speed to demand.

Inverter Pump Technology and Variable-Speed Operation

A standard compressor runs at one fixed RPM set by AC line frequency (60 Hz in the U.S.). It shuts off at setpoint and restarts at full speed when water cools.

An inverter converts AC to DC and back to AC at a controlled frequency, modulating compressor RPM continuously between low speed and full speed. The compressor never has to stop and restart.

What that looks like in practice:

  • Initial heat-up runs at high speed to bring the pool up quickly.
  • Maintenance mode runs at 20-50% capacity to hold setpoint with minimal energy draw.
  • Adjustments happen smoothly as conditions shift.

Inverter Pool Pump Energy Efficiency and Operating Costs

An inverter pool pump compressor uses less electricity than a fixed-speed equivalent because it runs at lower average wattage and avoids repeated startup spikes.

Real-world operating costs depend on:

  • Climate. Warmer ambient air gives more heat to extract per kilowatt.
  • Target temperature. Heating to 88°F costs significantly more than holding 78°F.
  • Pool cover use. Covering overnight cuts heat loss dramatically.
  • Electricity rate. Local kWh pricing has the biggest single impact on your bill.
  • Pool size and exposure. Larger or windier pools lose heat faster.

Coefficient of Performance (COP) and Efficiency Ratings to Look For

COP is the headline efficiency rating for any pool heat pump. A COP of 6.0 means six units of heat output per unit of electricity drawn.

Rating

Typical range

What it tells you

COP

3.0 to 7.0 standard; 5.0 to 10+ inverter at optimal conditions

COP varies with conditions. The same unit may rate 6.5 at 80°F air and 4.0 at 50°F air. Check the test conditions on the spec sheet, and prefer AHRI-certified models for independently verified ratings.

How to Size an Inverter Heat Pump for Your Pool

Sizing comes down to BTU per hour. The four factors that matter most:

  • Pool surface area. Most heat loss is at the water surface, so surface area drives sizing more than total volume.
  • Temperature differential. Heating from 65°F to 85°F requires more than holding 80°F to 82°F.
  • Climate and wind exposure. Open, breezy locations lose heat faster.
  • Cover usage. A solar or thermal cover can cut BTU requirements by 50% or more.

General sizing for residential in-ground pools:

  • Under 15,000 gallons: 85,000-100,000 BTU/hr
  • 15,000-25,000 gallons: 110,000-125,000 BTU/hr
  • 25,000-35,000 gallons: 135,000-145,000 BTU/hr
  • Above 35,000 gallons: 150,000 BTU/hr and up

Call or text us at 303-736-9856 with your pool dimensions, and we'll size a unit for you.

Climate Considerations and Minimum Operating Temperatures

A heat pump's efficiency depends on the heat available in the outside air. As the ambient temperature drops, less heat is available to extract.

  • Standard heat pumps typically operate down to 50-55°F. Below that, capacity and COP fall off sharply.
  • Inverter heat pumps with cold-climate features can work into the 20s°F or down to the mid-teens, depending on the model. These units include reverse-cycle defrost to prevent ice buildup.
  • At extreme cold, even cold-climate inverter models lose enough capacity that gas heating becomes more practical or the pool gets winterized.

In cooler regions, a cold-climate inverter model can stretch your swim season by weeks on either end.

Installation Requirements

Most manufacturer warranties require professional installation. The basics:

  • Electrical. Dedicated 240V circuit (some smaller units use 208V or 115V), with breaker sizing per manufacturer spec and a disconnect within sight of the unit.
  • Plumbing. The heat pump goes after the filter in the water loop, connecting the filter outlet to the heat pump inlet, then to the chlorinator (if equipped) and pool returns.
  • Flow rate. Each model has min and max GPM ratings. Your circulation pump must deliver flow within that range.
  • Siting. Level pad with at least 24 inches of side clearance and several feet of overhead clearance for the fan exhaust.

If your circulation pump motor needs replacement at the same time, see our pool pump motors selection.

Top Brands We Carry

  • AquaCal. Florida-based American manufacturer founded in 1981, and one of the largest pool heat pump producers in the world. Known for quiet operation across a wide range of climates.
  • Madimack. Full inverter range with built-in Wi-Fi on most models. Flagship units are engineered for cold-climate operation, extending pool seasons where standard heat pumps shut down.
  • Moov. AHRI-approved inverter line with a streamlined product range. Manufactured through a joint venture with Fairland, one of the largest global pool heat pump producers.

If you have an above-ground setup, see our above-ground pool heaters collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an inverter pool heat pump?

A pool heater that uses ambient air as its heat source and a variable-speed compressor to match output to demand. Quieter, more efficient, and longer-lasting than a fixed-speed heat pump.

How much does an inverter pool heat pump cost to run?

Operating cost depends on electricity rates, climate, target temperature, pool size, and cover use. In moderate climates, inverter heat pumps cost less per month than gas or standard heat pumps.

Are inverter heat pumps better than gas pool heaters?

For year-round or regular use in mild climates, yes. For occasional fast-heat needs or cold-climate operation, gas often makes more sense.

What size inverter heat pump do I need for my pool?

Most residential in-ground pools need 85,000 to 145,000 BTU/hr. Send us your pool dimensions, and we'll match a unit for you.

How long do inverter pool heat pumps last?

12 to 15 years or longer with proper installation and maintenance. The variable-speed compressor avoids the start-stop wear that shortens fixed-speed units.
