D.E. Filter Grids for Swimming Pools

Replacement D.E. Filter Grids: Quality Grids for Every Budget

If you're looking to replace a broken or damaged D.E. (Diatomaceous Earth) filter grid, Vita Pool Supply offers a wide range of manufacturer brands and generic options to suit every budget. D.E. filter grids are known for their exceptional ability to capture fine particles and sediment from pool water, ensuring crystal-clear results. However, to maintain optimal performance, it's crucial to replace the filter grids regularly—typically every 3 to 5 years, depending on usage and maintenance.

Don't let damaged or worn-out grids compromise your filter's efficiency. Shop with confidence at Vita Pool Supply, where you'll find the right replacement grid for your system, ready for fast shipping.

How a D.E. Filter Works

A D.E. filter coats its grids with a thin layer of diatomaceous earth, a fine powder made from fossilized aquatic organisms. As pool water passes through, the D.E. layer screens out particles as small as 2 to 5 microns, finer than any other pool filter type. That's why D.E. produces the clearest water of the three common systems, though it also asks for more maintenance than a pool cartridge filter. When the grids are clean and properly coated, water flows through easily; as debris loads the D.E. layer, pressure climbs and flow drops.

D.E. Pool Filter Components and Full Grid Set Breakdown

A complete D.E. pool filter grid assembly is more than the grids alone. A standard full set has eight grids: seven full-size grids plus one partial grid that fills the gap left for the standpipe. These mount onto a manifold at the top and seat into a bottom hub, with the standpipe running up the center to carry filtered water out.

When you replace grids, it's worth inspecting the manifold, standpipe and hubs at the same time. A cracked manifold or warped hub lets D.E. bypass the grids and blow back into the pool, so a fresh set of grids on damaged hardware won't fully fix the problem.

Signs You Need a D.E. Pool Filter Replacement

The clearest sign you need a replacement is when D.E. powder blows back into the pool, which indicates a tear in the fabric or a crack in the manifold. Other signs include:

  • Pressure that runs high and climbs quickly even after cleaning
  • Visible tears, holes or thin worn spots in the grid fabric
  • Broken or missing center bands, which let the grids splay open
  • Cloudy water that won't clear despite balanced chemistry and a fresh D.E. coat

Once the fabric tears, the grid can't be patched reliably, so replacement is the go-to fix.

Sizing D.E. Pool Filter Grids by Filter Model

D.E. pool filter grids are rated by square footage of filter area, and the grid set has to match. The common sizes are 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72 square feet, and your filter's size determines both the dimensions of the grids and how many full grids the set includes. Check the model number on your filter tank or the label near the base, then match the square footage exactly. A grid set sized for a 48 sq ft filter won't seat correctly in a 60 sq ft tank, so the rating matters more than the brand.

Compatibility with Hayward, Pentair, Sta-Rite, and Jandy Filters

We carry D.E. pool filter grids compatible with the major manufacturers, including Hayward, Pentair, Sta-Rite, and Jandy. Each brand uses its own grid dimensions and manifold design, so compatibility comes down to matching your specific filter model rather than just the brand name. If you know your filter's model number and square footage, you can match a manufacturer or generic grid set with confidence. Not sure which one you have? Send us your model number, and we'll confirm the right fit before you order.

How to Clean D.E. Pool Filter Grids

Routine cleaning restores flow when the grids are loaded with old D.E. and debris, but the fabric is still sound. Plan on cleaning two or three times a season.

  1. Shut down and open. Turn off the pump, relieve pressure at the air valve, drain the tank, then remove the clamp and lift off the top.
  2. Remove the grid assembly. Lift the full assembly out of the tank.
  3. Rinse the fabric. Hose each grid top to bottom, working the spray between the pleats until the water runs clear.
  4. Soak if needed. For oils or stubborn buildup, soak the grids in a filter cleaning solution, then rinse again.
  5. Reassemble and recharge. Reseat the assembly, close the tank, restart the pump and add fresh D.E. powder through the skimmer.

How to Replace D.E. Filter Grids, Step by Step

When cleaning no longer restores flow, or the fabric has torn, the grids need to be replaced.

  1. Shut down and drain. Turn off the pump, relieve pressure at the air valve, then open the drain plug and let the tank empty.
  2. Open the tank. Remove the clamp or band holding the tank halves together and lift off the top.
  3. Remove the grid assembly. Lift out the full assembly, then separate the manifold from the grids and slide each grid off.
  4. Inspect and replace. Check the manifold, standpipe, and hubs for cracks, then fit the new grids, reseating the partial grid in the standpipe gap.
  5. Reassemble and recharge. Lower the assembly back in, close the tank, restart the pump, and add fresh D.E. powder through the skimmer.

D.E. Powder Dosing After Replacement

After fitting new grids, the filter needs a fresh charge of D.E. powder to coat them before it can filter properly. The right amount is tied to your filter's square footage, so a 48 sq ft filter takes more powder than a 24 sq ft one. Check the dosing chart on your D.E. powder packaging against your filter size, add the powder slowly through the skimmer with the pump running, and watch the pressure gauge settle into its normal clean range. Underdosing leaves grids exposed and shortens their life; overdosing spikes pressure and cuts flow.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should D.E. filter grids be replaced?

Every 3 to 5 years for most pools. Heavy use shortens that window, and regular cleaning extends it.

How do I know if my D.E. pool filter grids are bad?

The giveaway is D.E. powder returning to the pool, which means torn fabric or a cracked manifold. See the signs section above for the full list of warning signs.

How do you clean D.E. filter grids?

Open the filter, lift out the grids and hose the fabric until it runs clear, soaking in a cleaning solution for stubborn buildup. The cleaning section above walks through each step.

What size do I need?

Match the set to your filter's square footage rating: 24, 36, 48, 60, or 72 sq ft. Your filter's model number tells you which.

Can you repair D.E. filter grids, or do they need replacing?

Cleaning handles debris, but physical damage doesn't repair reliably. Once the fabric tears or the center bands break, D.E. escapes through the gap, no matter how clean the grid is, so a torn grid should be replaced rather than patched.
