Pool Pump and Flow Control: Pipe Length Impact

Pool Pump and Flow Control: Pipe Length Impact

Question: Pipe Length Impact: Does inlet/outlet pipe length affect flow rate and head pressure like in single/dual-speed pumps?

Answer: Yes, when water moves through a plumbing elbow, it cavitates and will need time to settle. The inlet plumbing needs to be long enough to prevent this from allowing air to enter the pump. The rule is that you need 5 times the diameter of the pipe = length of straight pipe into the pump. For example, if using 2” plumbing, you need 10” of straight pipe into the pump.
