During stage 1, the 5-micron carbon block cartridge filters for bad tastes and odors, volatile organic compounds, solvents, degreasers, cleaning agents, gasoline compounds, chlorine, chloramine, pesticides, herbicides, and PFAS. During stage 2, the 10-micron water softener removes unwanted minerals that make water hard. This is especially important in the Southwest, where water is extremely hard.
