Generally speaking, “soft” water contains little to no calcium or magnesium ions, greatly improving its overall taste and usability in household and restaurant equipment. To treat comparatively “hard” water, several methods are used. In each approach, however, a water-softening compound, which typically replaces calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions, is used. Here, the supply of sodium ions must be maintained, usually by way of replacing water-softening cartridges on a regular basis.
