How to Measure Your Pool or Spa Light and Niche for Replacement

Choosing the right replacement light for your pool or spa starts with one simple step: measuring your existing light (the outer widest trim diameter). Getting the right fit ensures your light will install properly and operate safely.

Step-by-Step: How to Measure Your Pool Light and Niche:

  1. Turn off the power to your pool or spa light at the circuit breaker. Safety first!
  2. Light: Measure the diameter of the front face (lens) of the light fixture - this is the overall size (6" spa or 10" pool, rounded)
  3. Niche: Remove the light fixture from the wall. Most are held in by a single screw at the top (called the "set screw"). Let the fixture rest on the pool deck. Measure the opening - this is your niche size.

Standard Light Sizes:

Most pool and spa lights fall into one of these three categories:

Type Typical Size Description
Pool Light 10" Most in-ground pool lights use a 10” diameter fixture
Spa Light 6" Smaller spas and hot tubs use a 6” diameter fixture
Uncommon Size 8" Some older or custom-built pools may have a rare 8” light niche

Important: These sizes refer to the outer ring — not the internal niche. Always measure the actual light fixture faceplate
