Practical recommendation:
Best fit: about 20,000 to 40,000 gallons
Maximum: up to 42,000 gallons under favorable conditions
For cooler climates, shaded pools, windy areas, uncovered pools, or for faster heat-up, I would size more conservatively and position it closer to the 12,000 to 25,000 gallon range. For maintaining temperature in a covered pool, especially in warmer climates, it can reasonably support closer to the full 42,000 gallons.
