A multi-speed pump has a few fixed speed settings, usually 2 or 4, while a variable speed pump can run at almost any speed within its range. For most pool owners, that means a variable speed pump gives better energy savings, quieter operation, and more control, while a multi-speed pump is simpler but less efficient and less flexible.
