When you first fill an above ground pool, you should add a sanitizer like chlorine to kill bacteria, and a pool shock to oxidize contaminants. You should also test and adjust the pH (to 7.2–7.6), alkalinity (to 80–120 ppm), and calcium hardness (to 200–400 ppm) using the appropriate chemicals. Optionally, add a stabilizer (cyanuric acid) if using chlorine, to protect it from sunlight.
