No, you usually do not have to drain a pool to replace a LED light. Most modern pool lights are designed so that you can remove the fixture from the pool wall and bring it above the waterline to change the bulb or light unit, while the wiring remains connected. Just make sure to turn off all power to the light before starting the replacement.
