Think of it as relay-controlled, not a “smart/communicating” heater.
The HeatMax remote heater can be used with most automation systems as long as the automation can provide a dry-contact/relay output to enable/disable the heater. A common setup is to set the HeatMax thermostat to max, then let the automation call for heat by closing the relay—while also ensuring the pump is running and flow is present (the heater has its own flow/high-limit safeties).
